An image opens like a curtain

Overview

Exposition Aperture begins with a dramatic single-pixel width line, which gradually opens like a curtain to reveal entire satellite images, with a foreboding, shifting soundscape. This video was originally developed by Tom deMajo in collaboration with artist Juan Pablo 'JP' Carrascal, who created a unique tool that produces audio based on the pixel colours of satellite imagery.

Use of data

To create this tool, Carrascal created a value system that assigned sounds to pixel colours. As users explore a satellite image with their mouse, this shifts the colour, and therefore the sound produced.

Tom deMajo utilised a version of this tool playfully, reworking it into a dramatic video incorporating satellite images with Carrascal’s sonifer sounds. The piece was presented at Ars Electronica ‘24, creating an immersive environment, and a dramatic encounter.
