Deepening partnerships in Vienna

The ARTEO pioneer group recently gathered in Vienna for a dynamic two-day workshop aimed at enhancing communication, collaboration, and creative exploration. This workshop focused on utilising Earth observation data to inspire artistic expression and engage wider audiences. The artists engaged in interactive exercises and discussion, allowing them to refine their understanding of EO and share their artistic visions. The workshop also provided a platform for participants to discuss project updates and collectively strategise the future direction of ARTEO.
The event also strengthened the community of artists and scientific experts dedicated to climate and Earth science themes, with participation from partners Sistema and Planetary Visions.

ARTEO has been invited to present a special showcase of artworks which have emerged from the Pioneer Phase of the initiative, at the ARS ELECTRONICA festival. The event will feature works in a range of media, including video, data sonification, performance, and immersive 3D visual and interactive audio experiences, all utilising EO data. We are also thrilled to announce that the awarding-winning piece Holes in Light by Eva Petric also be included in the showcase in a new version tailored specifically for the advanced technology of Deep Space, and adapted for a live performance format.
Eva Petric Wins 2024 Hubert Sielecki Award for Short Films ARTEO pioneer artist Eva Petric was honoured with the prestigious 2024 Hubert Sielecki Award for short films at a recent ceremony in Vienna. Her winning piece, Holes in Light, is a poetic exploration of humanity's impact on the Earth, blending satellite imagery with artistic annotations. Holes in Light uses ARTEO curated satellite data to visualise human activities on Earth. Eva ingeniously overlays these images with shadow annotations, creating a powerful metaphor for humanity's presence on Earth. The result is a visually striking and thought-provoking short film that serves as a poetic apology from mankind to nature. The satellite imagery used in Holes in Light provides a unique perspective on human activity across the globe.
ARTEO Director Ravi Kapur and Artistic Advisor Fransisca Tan recently presented at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) conference in Vienna, highlighting the organisation's innovative approach to bridging art and science. During the Exploring the Art-Science Interface session, they introduced ARTEO's mission to support artists working with environmental data and imagery, with a focus on satellite Earth Observation (EO) and other geospatial information. The presentation showcased emerging artworks from the ARTEO Pioneers phase and shared valuable insights from their pilot programme. These findings will be used to inform and scale future art-science collaborations in the environmental sphere. This presentation at EGU demonstrates the growing interest in interdisciplinary approaches to science communication, as researchers and artists alike explore innovative ways to engage the public with critical environmental issues. As the art-science interface continues to evolve, initiatives like ARTEO play a crucial role in fostering creativity and collaboration, ultimately contributing to a more holistic understanding of our planet and its challenges.
The first workshop of the ARTEO pioneer artists recently took place in London. The event brought together artists, scientists and data experts for a day of creative exchange and exploration. The event's aim was to spark innovation at the intersection of art, EO and data science. Short talks from science and data experts featured cutting edge developments in their fields. The artists were given the opportunity to showcase their emerging works and ideas during the morning session. This allowed discussion and collaboration along with an open Q&A with advisors and invited guest speakers. Focused breakout sessions during the day allowed for technical demonstrations and hands-on experimentation. These collaborative groups tackled specific challenges and explored new possibilities with the data. The workshop further fostered a sense of community among the participating artists and has helped to set the direction for next steps for the ARTEO initiative.
